Vintage jewelry is a great way to own a small piece of history. Featuring more traditional techniques and a dark silver patina, vintage jewelry is very collectible. The age of our vintage jewelry usually ranges from the 1920’s to 1970’s, though some pieces may be older or newer. Prior to the 1960’s, artists rarely signed their jewelry- therefore most vintage pieces are unattributed unless the original owner kept records. Most of our vintage jewelry is acquired from private collections and we feel honored to pass on these treasured pieces to new owners. We recommend leaving the patina on old jewelry, as polishing can diminish the value. This lovely little ladies bracelet is made from solid sterling silver and High Grade Morenci Turquoise. The turquoise is New Mexico High Grade Cerrillos. Hand-stamped Rattle Snake jaws in the silver for extra decoration as well as lighting bolts see the attached pic for there meaning. The bracelet is Early Fred Harvey Navajo circa 1920. Measurements: 5 1/2 inches plus a flexible 1 1/8 inch opening = 6 5/8 inches, 1 1/4 inch tall at the center. Weight: 31 grams, 1.1 ounces. This Handmade cuff will become one of your favorites and is sure to become a treasured family heirloom for generations. The quality of this turquoise is second to none! One of a Kind! This is a Classic PIECE FROM DAYS GONE BY. A great-looking, extremely wearable piece from a fascinating and romantic period of Southwestern history, this bracelet was likely first acquired by a traveler on the Santa Fe railroad from a Fred Harvey Company trading post such as the Indian Room at Albuquerques Alvarado Hotel or The Hopi House at the Grand Canyon. As with Vintage Native American Pieces, some pieces may Exhibit Test Mark(s), Patina, Scratches, and Minor Dings from the Years in and out of Pawn Shops and Personal Collections. Words alone are not enough describe this extraordinary cuff so please take a look at the pictures to get a feel for this magnificent valuable masterpiece of Native American Indian craftsmanship. Fred Harvey Style (1900 1955). You will often see the term Fred Harvey era in many jewelry descriptions. There are estimated to be three distinct periods in the Fred Harvey era of dating jewelry and other Native American art objects. Others may have their own breakdown of these time periods. Early Fred Harvey era: Late 1800s 1910s [rare]. Mid Fred Harvey era: 1910s 1930s. Late Fred Harvey era: 1940s 1970s. Even so, it continued to be produced until the mid-1940s or 1950s. The Bell Trading Co. Continued on until the 1970s. Fred Harvey [1835 1901] was a prominent 19th century Native American curios entrepreneur, business man, hotel and restauranteur who fairly singlehandedly established the emerging 20th century American tourist fascination with traveling to the great American southwest and exploring the culture of Native Americans and their legacy of Native arts, jewelry and crafts. Instead of referring to the tourist jewelry from the era as Fred Harvey jewelry, it has been suggested that railroad jewelry would have been more appropriate as Harvey entered into an ingenious contract with the Santa Fe Railroad to provide a series of luxurious new eating houses along the new rail routes which were quickly crisscrossing the American southwest. Once Indian jewelers and traders realized the Anglo preference, they began catering to the Anglo tourist’s tastes by producing a full line of lightweight jewelry, much of it mass-produced with the help of specialized machinery and commercial sheet silver. There were also numerous silversmiths who insisted on making everything by hand: pounding, cutting, stamping etc. In addition to the consideration of weight, various design elements or symbols were decided upon as standard designs that would decorate most products – the Thunderbird, the arrows (crossed arrows or single arrows), the four-directions symbol, lightning zigzags, arrowheads, etc. It was perceived that these were the symbols that most tourists had in mind as belonging to the Indian realm, and consequently, many Indian jewelers would keep to the use of these symbols instead of adding their own personal touch or incorporating other aesthetics. Today, Fred Harvey era jewelry is Highly Collectible and highly sought after. Easy to wear, and generally with a fair amount of ornamentation/stamping, Fred Harvey jewelry is an enjoyable genre of Indian jewelry that takes us back 100 years and can leave us in awe! This marvelous bracelet is spectacular! It is even more impressive in person than the pictures show! There is some band flexibility for size adjustment. An exact date is not available for when the stamp STERLING was first used on Native American jewelry. Items made in the 1930s would usually not have that stamp nor any other hallmark. A few items made in the 1940s to 1950s might have the STERLING stamp, most notably, those made by Bell Traders during that time period. Pieces made in the 1950s and 1960s and later often have the STERLING indication. Cerrillos is not only an uncommon and unique form of native New Mexican turquoise, but has a history entwined with both ancient Native peoples of the Southwest and more recent American mining companies. Cerrillos turquoise was created and mined under unusual circumstances. It is the only turquoise that formed at the base of a volcano. Thus, a variety of colors developed from the minerals in the various volcanic host stones. In fact, the Cerrillos New Mexico Turquoise mines produce seventy-five colors, from tan to khaki-green to rich, blue-green to bright and light colors. Located ten miles south of Santa Fe, it was the site of the largest prehistoric mining activity on the continent because the huge turquoise deposit was partially exposed at the surface. Miners from the San Marcos Pueblo, who later moved to Santo Domingo Pueblo south of Santa Fe, most heavily worked the mine. Using only stone axes, mauls, antler picks, and chisels, Pueblo miners removed 100,000 tons of solid rock to create a pit mine 200 feet deep. They dug other vertical shafts into the ground to reach veins of turquoise. Miners carried tools and leather rock buckets on their backs as they climbed in and out of the shafts using notched logs as ladders. The turquoise obtained from this hard work traded among early peoples from Mexico to the Midwest and from the east to west coasts. In New Mexico, many pieces of Cerrillos turquoise for personal and trade use have been unearthed in the prehistoric ruins of Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon. The Pueblo peoples continued to extract turquoise from the Cerrillos mine until the 1870’s when a silver mining boom raised interest in the area. This bracelet is filled with elegance and it gives off a timeless look and feel. It is sure to be a great addition to any collection! Words alone are not enough describe this extraordinary bracelet so please take a look at the pictures to get a feel for this magnificent valuable masterpiece of Native American Indian craftsmanship. So we do not disappoint you with a possible out of stock item. This is a Incredible Rare Gem Grade Arizona Bisbee Turquoise SQUASH BLOSSOM NECKLACE, Vintage Navajo Old Pawn circa 1950’s. A classic squash blossom necklace featuring ten blossoms and a large naja set with top grade GEM Grade Arizona Bisbee TURQUOISE. It starts as a typical squash blossom necklace with the double strands of handmade bench beads. On the strand there are 10 shadowbox pieces that feature a High Grade Bisbee Turquoise Nugget in the center and the actual blossoms at the ends. The Naja in the center of the necklace has the same shadowbox design with the Amazing Turquoise nuggets following the curve of the Naja itself. It is in Excellent Vintage condition with minor scuffing and scratching due to previous use and age, and a light patina. Weight: 135.3 g. Naja: 2.53 in by 2.56 in. Squash Blossoms: 1.45 in by. Stone: High Grade Arizona Bisbee Nugget. Hallmark: RY (We could not find anything about this hallmark). The Squash Blossom Necklace. The Navajo word for the squash blossom bead means bead that spreads out so it would seem to me that the original intent was design not squash. But what do I know, I wasnt around in 1880 when spread beads first appeared. In about 1880, the tri-petal form that we know as a squash blossom bead appeared. At first, tri-petal silver beads were simply interspersed with plain beads in a naja necklace. Then stones began to be added to the blossom beads partly to please the maker but mostly to satisfy customer demand. Squash, corn and beans are important foods for the Native American people of the US southwest. They are often used in a symbolic way in jewelry and ceremonies. Some say the Navajo squash blossom necklace has a connection to southwestern agriculture, other say the the spread petal design is just that, a design, and that is was only after white man asked, what is this, what does it mean did the name squash blossom come to be. Yet others say the Navajo copied a similar Spanish design of the pomegranate. The Naja has its origin with the Moors in Spain. It is a good luck charm to ward off the evil eye. It was often used on the browband of Moorish Horses. It is thought that it came to Mexico via the Spanish Moors and from there was adopted by the Navajo Indians. The naja is the base pendant of many ornate squash blossom necklaces. Bisbee Turquoise is one of the most beautiful types of Turquoise that has ever been taken out of the ground in North America. Its striking true blue color ranges are spectacular and the chocolate matrix that the Turquoise is found in, extenuates its beauty. Bisbee Turquoise is some of the finest Arizona Turquoise and there is no Turquoise on earth that is comparable to Bisbee Turquoise, as it has its own unusual characteristics that are unique only to itself. The Bisbee Mine was originally founded in the mid 1870’s and by 1975 when it was closed had become the largest and richest mine the world has ever known. Taking out over 8,000,000,000 pounds of copper the mine was given the name “The Copper Queen”. The Bisbee Mine also produced nearly 3,000,000 ounces of Gold, 77,000,000 ounces of Silver and billions of pounds of lead and zinc! The Bisbee Mine also produced a variety of outstanding minerals including Malichite, Azurite and of course Turquoise that are by products of the metals and minerals that are native to this Mine. However, mining at Bisbee did not include mining for gemstones, any Turquoise or other gemstone materials were discarded by the mining companies and prohibited to be taken out by the minors due to liability reasons. In the late 1950’s, a deposit of Turquoise was found in the Lavendar Pit region of the Bisbee Mine. Most of this Turquoise was hauled off to an area where they dumped their waste and over burdens from the mining project. Individual Minors recognized the beauty of the Bisbee Turquoise and would sneak small amounts of the Turquoise out in their lunch boxes and/or whatever other means they could muster. It was not long after Bisbee Turquoise was discovered in the Mine that it was introduced to the Southwestern Jewelry Industry. By the early 1960’s, Bisbee Turquoise had become the finest Turquoise the market had ever seen and demand for it went through the roof. In 1972, the one and only lease ever given to work the dumps from the Lavendar Pitt was awarded to Mr. Robert Matthews of Durango, Colorado. Bob and his associates worked the dumps hard for approximately two years to recover less than 2,000 pounds of good to excellent quality Bisbee Turquoise. Due to mining restrictions and the cost of recovering the Bisbee Turquoise from the dumps, mining slowed down and ended by 1980. Only small amounts of Bisbee Turquoise have surfaced since and this has been from Mine Robbers that sneak into the guarded Mine late at night to hunt for bits and pieces of this fine mineral, Bisbee Turquoise! There is very little True Bisbee Turquoise available today and due to its rarity and exceptional beauty it is very valuable, and Bisbee Turquoise remains nearly as rare as hens teeth! Sleeping Beauty turquoise is noted for its solid, light blue color with no matrix. The host rock is granite. Sleeping Beauty turquoise is the favorite of Zuni Pueblo lapidaries and silversmiths for the purity in color. This mine was one of the largest in North America. Now, one of the most prolific mines in the US has been closed! The Sleeping Beauty mine produced well, about 1600 pounds a month, according to information obtained from the miner/owner in 2010. The tons of tailings piles, which produced most of the turquoise, have even been exhausted. The beautiful, solid color of Sleeping Beauty is especially beloved by many Europeans. A great amount of this turquoise was exported to Italy & France alone. In its hey-day, the Sleeping Beauty mine yielded only 4% of natural, unaltered turquoise. A high percentage was enhanced, a process that only added value to the lesser grade Sleeping Beauty turquoise. After the mine closed prices began to rise. Wise people bought all they could. In one year prices have tripled. Calls come from China and Japan daily. There is a stampede for all Sleeping Beauty. Look for the scramble to intensify, making this a Rare and very, desirable highly collectible turquoise. This Necklace is filled with elegance and it gives off a timeless look and feel. Vintage Fred Peshlakai Navajo Turquoise & Sterling Silver Concho Belt Signed
The book written by Steven Curtis titled, Navajo Silversmith Fred Peshlakai, His Life & Art, has featured this concho belt on the front cover of his book. At one point in his career he opened a shop in Los Angeles and worked there for 20 years. Fred Peshlakai taught Kenneth Begay jewelry making. Peshlakais silver work, designs and his exceptional turquoise stones of the highest quality brought him to the forefront of becoming a great and revered Navajo silversmith. His innovative designs are sought after by collectors all over the world. There are bracelets but belts are very hard to come by and if you are a collector, this would be a good opportunity to have a Fred Peshlakai belt added to your fine collection. This belt is crafted like a fine piece of jewelry. The belt is not heavy or overpowering. It has the character of a first phase with its cut out center slots, but his style is so innovative that the silver work has a character all its own. The turquoise stones are so penetrating especially against the patina of the sterling silver. This is a treasure of fine ingenuity with a subtle smooth design and to be worn as a piece of fine jewelry. The weight of the belt is: 367 grams/12.94 ounces. The buckle is: 3 1/8 inches x 2 6/8 inches. There are 8 conchos (not including the buckle) and the sizes are: 2 15/16 inches x 2 5/8 inches. The belt including the strap is: 33 inches long. Also, on the back of each concho is a 1 inch sterling silver bar for sliding the strap through. Please Note: I have documentation from the very prominent Native American Trading Company validating in writing the authenticity of this belt made by Fred Peshlakai and of course, the above mentioned book. The item “Vintage Fred Peshlakai Navajo Turquoise & Sterling Silver Concho Belt Signed” is in sale since Friday, July 20, 2018. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Cultures & Ethnicities\Native American\ US\1935-Now\Jewelry”. The seller is “janetrosemarie” and is located in Winsted, Connecticut.
