Up for sale is this magnificent Navajo bolo tie featuring 15 Sleeping Beauty turquoise stones, handcarved silver rope, silver beads, handstamped silver borders, handstamped silver tips, and a handbraided leather tie! The tie measures about 36 in length Sterling silver, marked. The bolo measures around 2″? X 1″? Sturdy 46.8grams Sleeping Beauty Turquoise. Sleeping Beauty was originally discovered during the Anasazi times by Native Americans. At the time, turquoise was mined with hand tools. Sleeping Beauty was re-discovered by accident in the 1900s when the mine was opened in the pursuit of copper. The sleeping beauty mine is located in Globe Arizona. It is named after the mountain ranges where it is located. The mountain range where it is located, from a distance, resembles a woman that is sleeping with her arms crossed. Hence the name Sleeping Beauty. In 2012, the Sleeping Beauty mine closed it’s turquoise mining operations but not because the mine was spent. The new owner decided to not pursue the turquoise mining operation and instead focus solely on copper. The extremely large copper deposits surrounding the sleeping beauty mine is what gives the stones their very vibrant blue color.

Sleeping Beauty Turquoise was first found by the Native Americans during the Anasazi times. At this time the Turquoise was mined with hand tools and little bits were collected at a time. The baby blue or “Robin’s Egg” blue Turquoise was mainly used as beads and on shells that the Native American tribes of the Southwest had traded for with the Native American tribes of central and south America. Sleeping Beauty Turquoise also made its way to Pueblo Bonito during the Anasazi times along with Turquoise from other deposits in the Southwest. Pueblo Bonito served as a trade center for Anasazi Turquoise for North American Tribes, Central American Tribes and South American tribes. Since this time, the Sleeping Beauty mine was developed by Anglo peoples in search of Copper and other meetal ore.

This vintage Native American ring is circa 1960s to 1970s and is made via a method called “channel inlay, ” in which turquoise stones are cut and laid within the sterling silver borders or channels. This design is sometimes called fish scale, and essentially it is an abstract design, very classic to the era in which was made. In the day, this would have been a Men’s ring, the sterling silver sand cast. Today it’s a great unisex ring, perfect for the old soul who loves the uneven hues of the natural sleeping beauty turquoise. The ring is Size 7.75 The ring face is just over 17mm wide by 23mm long. Weight 17.3grams no marks but tested as sterling silver. The Sleeping Beauty turquoise mine was named after the mountain range where it is located, which from a distance is said to resemble a sleeping woman with her arms crossed. Increased government regulations and mining costs led to the mine’s closure in 2012. Since then, the price for Sleeping Beauty turquoise has risen significantly.
