Richard Begay Navajo Sterling Silver Turquoise Butterfly Concho Belt Buckle

Taking the shape of what’s known as a “butterfly” concho, this traditional Navajo belt buckle comprises sterling silver and turquoise. The butterfly shaped sterling panel is set with a single, oval turquoise stone at the center in a sawtooth sterling silver bezel, while the remainder of the piece is stamped with various designs including scallops, half moons, dots, and fine lines. Fits belt size 1? Weight22grams made by Richard Begay. Richard Begay was born and raised in Navajoland, Arizona. Throughout his art classes in school, he always wanted to create the perfect shape. His first career, however, took him into the Forest Industry. He soon realized that he wanted to follow the yearnings of his heart and create beautiful jewelry. He borrowed jewelry tools from his father-in-law and set to work, learning the demanding craft of silversmithing. Richard was immediately drawn to the intricate inlay work, for which he is known for. As he perfected his craft, Richard explored different techniques of inlaying. He was always searching for the best way, the most beautiful setting, the perfect harmony of material and craft. He also developed an eye for choosing the best stones for his inlay. Turquoise and coral are his favorite, but Richard used a wide variety of stones and shells, including malachite, spiny oyster, and pacific coral. Not limited to the usual in anything he did, he also inlaid opals, sugilite, lapis and other exotic stones into his award-winning pieces. The importance of harmony in his work was echoed in his silverwork, especially his pendants. In these pieces, he incorporated important symbols from his culture. Corn was a significant gift to the People by the Creator–it represents life to the Navajo. The Yei-Be-Che is the personal link between the Navajo gods and mortal man. The Bear, one of the four animals given to the first people, embodies power and wisdom. It was provided for protection and guidance, and to ward off evil. Richard also used the Steppe Design found in the wedding baskets and recreates special times, such as the social dances he goes to. Encircling it all is his extraordinary inlay, adding color and life. The beautiful things Richard looked for exist in his creations. Richard passed away in 2013.

This sterling silver belt buckle inlayed with slabs of Ithaca Peak turquoise and jet was made in the 1970s by Navajo artist Richard Begay. The inlay is expertly worked, the design, can be found in Volume 3 of “Zuni, The Art and The People” published in 1975 by Ed and Barbara Bell. Published by Squaw Bell Traders. Wonderful workmanship on this Belt Buckle. Will fit a 1½ belt. Hallmarked on the back. Top to bottom x 2? Excellent original condition, surface wear and age patina. Made by Richard Begay. This listing features a vintage turquoise cluster ring, handcrafted by Navajo Artist J. NOTE: Please view all 23 photos. The last 4 photos show the ring modeled on a medium/large hand. This highly sought after design features a beautiful display of Turquoise clustered over a long curved bed of oxidized silver. The stones are accompanied by twisted rope and droplets making for a classic Navajo design. All of the stones are secure and in good condition while featuring blue too green color hues with subtle matrix inclusions. The back of the ring carries a sturdy double fused shank that splits at the back of the face. There is no sterling stamp which is common of vintage Navajo jewelry however, the Artist signature is clearly visible along the inner shank. The silver has been tested and we guarantee it’s purity of. This beautiful piece of authentic Navajo jewelry will make a great addition to any collection and surely be a new favorite to show off. Wear with pride and enjoy this tangible asset before handing it down in the future. Size – Sits between a size 8 and 8.25 on a ring mandrel. Weight – 11 Grams. Ring Face Measurements – The ring face measures just under 2″ long by just under 1″ wide (1-15/16″ X 15/16″). Stone Measurements – The largest snake eye stone, at the center of the face, measures 3/16 wide. The remaining snake eye stones measure 1/8 wide or just under. The teardrop stones measure about 3/16″ long by 1/8″ wide or just under. Shank Measurements – At bottom center the shank measures just a hair under 3/16 wide. The split shanks have a 1/4 spread when meeting the back of the face. Signed by Artist – Yes, Stamped J. Stamped Sterling – NO, tested and verified. 925 sterling silver guaranteed. Later-Mid Century, 1970’s+. Condition – Preowned, in good vintage condition with a slightly aged patina, ready to wear or display. I treat every item as if it were my own.
