The Campitos turquoise mine in Sonora, Mexico has been producing turquoise since the 1980s. The mine is located in the Cananea mountains, about 35 miles from the US/Mexico border and 150 miles southeast of Tucson, Arizona. The word “Campito” is Spanish for “little field”. The mine produces a rare and valuable gemstone that is sought after for its unique color and quality. The turquoise is medium light-blue with no matrix and a little pyrite, and is found as free-form nuggets in clay material, rather than in rock veins. The mine is unique because it produces turquoise that is often found in clay deposits as nuggets, while most turquoise is found in veins.
