NAVAJO STERLING SILVER & TURQUOISE RING BY MELVIN CHEE. This ring is a great representation of hand made Navajo jewelry and will make a statement on your hand. A beautiful pieces of Turquoise are set into a sterling silver setting. Hand made by Navajo silversmith Melvin Chee. The Navajos began working with silver in the 19th century, and began making things like buckles, bridles, buttons, rings, canteens, hollow beads, earrings, crescent-shaped pendants (called “najas”), bracelets, crosses, powder chargers, tobacco canteens, and conchos (for belts). Their silversmithing skills has evolved and changed throughout the years, and in about 1880 Navajo silversmiths started to set turquoise in their silver work. Traditionally, Navajo artists worked with jewelry techniques like repousee and stamp work, but today they explored in other Native American jewelry making techniques like Zuni inlay work and Hopi overlay work. How to Make Sure Your Bracelet Will Fit. The best way to get a good fit is to measure a cuff bracelet you already have that fits you well and look for a bracelet with those dimensions. If you don’t have a cuff bracelet to use for comparison, then measure your wrist where you want to wear the bracelet. Use a half inch wide strip of paper and wrap it around your wrist. Be sure that it completes its circumference over your wrist bone and is in comfortable contact with your skin the whole way around. Mark the paper where it begins to overlap with the start, lay it out flat, and measure from the start to the mark. This is your proper wrist circumference.
