Eugene Belone Navajo Eugene Belone is an accomplished Navajo jeweler and silversmith. Hailing from Gallup, New Mexico, Eugene has been making jewelry for over a decade. Eugene’s wife, Elouise Kee, taught him the craft of jewelry and silversmithing. Eugene incorporates contemporary, detailed stamp work with traditional designs. All of his pieces are hand made and stamped. Carico Lake turquoise is named after the mine’s location on a dried-up lake bed in a high altitude area of Lander County, Nevada. Carico Lake Turquoise can come in bright blue and bright green colors. Some Carico Lake stones can even contain both green and blue tones. The stone’s bright green color is due to high zinc content and is very unique and collectible. Some consider the green version of Carico Lake Turquoise to be a form of “Faustite”- though there is some debate about this. While the mine has produced a fair amount of turquoise over the years, the lime green stone is very valuable due to its rarity and demand. This mine is also known to produce rare psuedomorph clams that are filled with turquoise. Clam fossils deposited in the Carico lakebed eventually dissolved and over time the clam-shaped cavities were filled with beautiful Turquoise.

From the silver coins my ancestors would melt down to make jewelry, to the point the U. Government had to remove silver coinage & replace them with paper forms of 10 & 5 cent denominations. The push & pull of the clay, knowing how to find the center & balance so all things will be beautiful again. Each piece I create is a small representation of me as an artist. All of the pieces include hand-cut metals, and I in-person select every piece of turquoise that goes into my art. They are melted & joined, shaped & shaved. In my culture, our prayer & intention goes into each piece & acts as a form of protection. May you all walk in beauty.
