His use of stars is found in most of his designs. Stars are recognized in every country and continent and appear on countless flags. They symbolize the heavens, brightness and good fortune. This star has no pin and no bail, so it’s not a brooch or a pendant. It appears to have been designed to be a display piece. The back is hallmarked Navajo Cody Sanderson U. ” It measures approximately 1-5/8″ long by 1-5/8 wide. Navajo artist Cody Sanderson is known for his imaginative, often playful style. His award-winning jewelry frequently involves hand-fabricating techniques such as bending, forging, casting, and stamping. Raised in Window Rock, Arizona, Sanderson now works from his studio in Santa Fe. He began making jewelry in 1999, learning his craft by experimenting, asking questions of other jewelers, and taking classes to learn new techniques such as tufa casting. This unique Cody Sanderson sterling silver star is in very good condition, as shown in the photos. It has some minor surface wear and age-appropriate oxidation. The squash blossom necklace is perhaps one the most famous Navajo styles produced, along with turquoise inlay rings. Turquoise is an important stone in Navajo culture; symbolizing happiness, good fortune, and good health. The first Navajo silversmith, Atsidi Sani, was taught around 1865 by a Mexican silversmith. Atsidi Sani in turn taught his four sons, who then started teaching other Navajo artisans. In the beginning, Navajo artisans created sterling silver jewelry for themselves and others in the Navajo Nation.
