A beautiful, expertly made concho belt. Buckle, 7 conchos, 8’butterflies’ f3 long. Victor Moses Begay was an expert silversmith who worked from the 50s to the late 80s. Known for his work in small stones like this one (petitpoint), somewhat unusual for a Navajo smith as Zuni smiths are better known for this sort of stonework. I understand that Victor was a generous teacher of younger smiths and family members, son Larry Moses Begay being a well-recognized smith in his own right, as an example. This one is exceptional in my view – 444 stones, with no damage. Excellent silverwork and large size. Buckle is 3.5″ x 3″. Conchos 3 x 2.5″; Butterflies 2 5/8 x 1 1/8″. Beautiful color, precise work. The conchos are held on the belt with copper strips soldered to the back, where the leather belt slides through. As you can see, the silver pieces are quite close together on this 43 belt. The conchos will not look sparse on a longer belt when you outgrow this one. We bought 2 from Victor at different times, one for Neta, one for me in case we ever agreed to wear anything matching, which we may have done once in our 57 years of marriage.
