Navajo Turquoise Silver Ring 12.7 Gms 1950’s Vintage Tucson Estate
From a forgotten box in my office closet and an estate here in the Old Pueblo some twenty years ago is this rather striking mid century or so Navajo silver ring with a large turquoise centerpiece. The I believe 1950’s or possibly earlier 1960’s finger ornament is absolutely not your typical budget tourist bring back from that time, and certainly not meant for any shy flower. Picture instead some Kennedy era cognoscenti who might appreciate the attention drawn by that generous 24x21mm blue stone – here framed in dramatic fashion with a square twist silver wire surround. While a bit different than the mostly prewar Southwestern finery I normally offer, it should more than do the trick for those who can remember when most Arizona roads were two-lane and gas was 18 cents a gallon. Put another way this wearable artwork has every bit of the visual charisma you require, and you won’t see another like it when looking around the room. No, they don’t make them like this anymore. Weight is very good for the form at about total 12.7 grams on my portable digital scale. Condition is quite fine with a nice aura of time to the surfaces. Be aware I avoid every urge to refresh away or “improve” on natural toning with these old beauties – you want that done, you do it. Typical and expected evidence of period finger duty simply validates the history. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Ring size is at least 8 1/2 and perhaps 8 3/4 my jeweler’s ring mandrel – the bottom edge of the shank reaches the 8 1/2 line on a flat faced jeweler’s ring mandrel with a bit of room showing at the sides (my regular round mandrel will not measure accurately because of the large front plate). About 1 9/32 in. Vertical at the front. If you prefer vintage for the road less travelled, or simply wish an immediate improvement to the ambiance of each day, this will have great meaning for you. Navajo 29×24.5mm Turquoise Silver Ring 11.7 Gms 1940’s Vintage Tucson Estate
From a Tucson estate some twenty years ago is this visually compelling I believe later 1940’s or perhaps 1950’s Navajo silver ring with a big 29×24.5mm fat oval turquoise stone and lovely old style stampwork decor to what appears an ingot shank. The overtly eye catching local lapidary presentation (a lovely bluish green and I believe Kingman) is set in a plain low walled handmade bezel and thoughtfully bracketed by twisted silver wire. This flanking embellishment provides balance and adds measurably to the visual charisma and distinctly vintage look. There are remains of what may an early incuse pictographic maker mark struck to the back of the shank – I say “may” because an old well accomplished size adjustment has obliterated a portion of its center (I have shown it two ways in the pics for reference). While the crafting of this large beauty would have been contemporary with some so called Fred Harvey style ornaments meant for “Indian Detour” visitors, it does not speak to any mainstream of that aesthetic. This is much more a kind of wearable art. Such atypical joys could once be gleaned now and then by hard searching within the ring trays at those historic trading posts in the hinterlands. While a few of the picturesque rest stops are still there, you would be hard pressed to find anything that looks like this. Weight is very good for the form at about 11.7 grams on my portable digital scale. Condition is quite fine with a nice aura of time to the surfaces. The turquoise stone is well preserved, with a tiny (ancient) loss of some matrix along one side – an unobtrusive mention which may actually be as originally set. Typical and expected signs of period finger duty simply validate the history. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Ring size is about 4 3/4 or possibly 5 on a flat faced jeweler’s ring mandrel (the lower edge of the shank reaches between those lines on the mandrel). So you know, my regular round mandrel would not measure accurately due to the generous dimensions of the front plate – 1 3/16 in. If you prefer earlier 20th Century Southwestern tribal referenced silver adornment as a road less travelled, or simply wish a single immediate improvement to the ambiance of each day, this will have great meaning for you. Navajo Turquoise Ingot Silver Ring 9.8 Gms 1940’s Vintage Tucson Estate
From a long forgotten box in my office closet and a Tucson estate some three decades ago is this decidedly attractive 1940’s or so Navajo ingot silver ring with a large 23x10mm slightly tapered oval turquoise stone. The rather impressive bluish green centerpiece is enhanced by silver drop embellishment both above and below, with thick flanking columns of spiral wire completing the picture. Well not quite – the “double” shank was accomplished by traditional casting. While contemporary with so called Fred Harvey jewelry crafted as a more wearable alternative for visitors, this beauty hews much closer to a real tribal aesthetic. It may have been discovered in the pawn case at some road side trading post rest stop in the hinterlands, or been traded off the finger of a local standing right outside. If vintage and lots of visual charisma are your cup of tea here you go. Just so you know, there aren’t many of these in those pawn cases anymore. Weight is very good for the form at about 9.8 grams on my portable digital scale. Condition is quite fine with a nice aura of time to the surfaces as seen in the pics. The turquoise is well preserved and has achieved “the look”. The shank retains plenty of “meat” and I see no sign of any subsequent size alterations. All typical and expected signs of previous finger duty simply validate a genuine history. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Ring size is about 6 1/4 on my jeweler’s ring mandrel (the bottom edge of the shank reaches that line on the mandrel). About 1 1/4 in. Vertical and 9/16 in. Horizontal at the front. If you prefer historic Navajo and Pueblo adornment for the road less travelled, or simply wish a single vintage Southwestern improvement to the ambiance of each day, this should have great meaning for you.
