Vintage Navajo Sterling/Turquoise Concho Belt Famous Victor Moses Begay. 4316pc

A beautiful, expertly made concho belt. Buckle, 7 conchos, 8’butterflies’ f3 long. Victor Moses Begay was an expert silversmith who worked from the 50s to the late 80s. Known for his work in small stones like this one (petitpoint), somewhat unusual for a Navajo smith as Zuni smiths are better known for this sort of stonework. I understand that Victor was a generous teacher of younger smiths and family members, son Larry Moses Begay being a well-recognized smith in his own right, as an example. This one is exceptional in my view – 444 stones, with no damage. Excellent silverwork and large size. Buckle is 3.5″ x 3″. Conchos 3 x 2.5″; Butterflies 2 5/8 x 1 1/8″. Beautiful color, precise work. The conchos are held on the belt with copper strips soldered to the back, where the leather belt slides through. As you can see, the silver pieces are quite close together on this 43 belt. The conchos will not look sparse on a longer belt when you outgrow this one. We bought 2 from Victor at different times, one for Neta, one for me in case we ever agreed to wear anything matching, which we may have done once in our 57 years of marriage. This listing is for a vintage. Stamped repousse sterling silver turquoise concho belt 40 long 70g. I have 2 other native american concho belts / necklaces starting today at. 99 cents as well!!! The belt is signed and marked sterling – see photos # 2 & 12, but the bottoms of the stamps are cut off – you can only see the NG from “sterling” and the initials appear to be some combination of FF or FE or EE or EF – I found at least a couple Navajo artists with those initials – regardless of who made it, it is beautiful. The belt is a hair under 40 long from end to end – it weighs approx 70 grams so is not a super heavy belt. In very good vintage condition with no specific damage that I can see (HOWEVER, it is not new and may exhibit the slight scuffs and superficial marks you would expect to find in a previously handled or lightly worn piece of sterling jewelry). Please see all 12 photos – including 6 that are t aken with a penny and/or on a 1 ruler grid for relative size purposes. Please look at the pictures I have included to judge the condition for yourself and let me know if you have any questions. Please note also , that the flash and close-up function of my camera shows all of the dust, etc. Which is not visible to the naked eye. It also magnifies any small scratches/scuff marks to many, many, many times their actual size – Also, please note that often the shiny surfaces of jewelry act as mirrors and reflect other nearby items and are not flaws. Also, any boxes / coins used for photography purposes are not included, unless other wise stated. RARE Vtg NAVAJO WILLIE SHAW Signed STERLING SILVER CONCHO BELT. This Navajo concho belt is in mint condition and features exquisite craftsmanship. Signed “WS”, the initials of Willie Shaw a well known Navajo artisan who was invited to display his creations in the first Indian Fair held by the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona in May 1959. 925 Sterling Silver, Copper, Leather. 3 wide x 2 high. 2 wide x 1.75 high. Length of Leather Belt. Width of Leather Belt: 1. 291 grams (10.26 ounces). Holes on the Leather at 30.5, 31.25, 32, 32.75, and 33 5/8. Stone(s): High grade turquoise – largest stone is about 5/8″ tall by 1/4″ wide, bezel to bezel. Weight: 392.5 grams! Height: Buckle 2 1/4″, conchos 2 1/2″, butterfly conchos just shy of 2. Width: Buckle 2 7/8″, conchos 3″, butterfly conchos 1 1/8. Length: 41 1/4 end to end. Clasp: Pin buckle with swivel keeper can accommodate 1 strap. Belt Size: Roughly 35 1/4″ first hole, and 37″ last one. Additional notes: Strap is used and has some concho marks from end to end, not very visible because conchos cover most of the strap. Still in fairly good shape. High grade turquoise and heavy gauge silver. All measurements are approximations.
